Project Specifiers Beware: Dont Get Caught Accepting What You Dont Want

Define: Water Leakage

When it comes to Division 8 Specifications the Field Testing Section will likely use one of two sources when it comes to defining "water leakage".

Either AAMA or ASTM.

AAMA: The American Architectural Manufacturers Association is a Trade / Manufacturers Association

ASTM: The American Society for Testing and Materials is a Consensus Association
Each organization defines "water leakage" differently.
  • ASTM E 1105: "...penetration of water beyond a plane parallel to the glazing (verticle plane) intersecting the innermost projection of the test specimen, not including interior trim and hardware..."
  • AAMA : "...uncontrolled water that appears on any normally exposed interior surfaces, that is not contained or drained back to the exterior, or that can damage adjacent materials or finishes...The collection of up to 15ml (1/2 oz.) of water in a five minute test...shall not be considered water leakage."

With the real life potential for a rainstorm that could last an hour or more, you might want to consider how you, The Specifier, will define "Water Leakage". An hour could effectively result in 6 ounces of water on the interior...

Once you've selected your performance criteria, test early and test often.

  • Require testing early in the project
  • Test after several typical units have been installed
  • Test again and again (33% & 66%) Verifying your specified criteria is being met.

Roof Uplift Field Testing ASTM E 907 & FM 1-52

ASTM E-907 & FM 1-52

There are two recognized field test methods for determining uplift resistances of membrane roof systems:

ASTM E-907 Standard Test Method for Field Testing Uplift Resistance of Adhered Membrane Roofing Systems

FM Global Property Loss Prevention Data Sheet 1-52 (FM 1-52 Field Uplift Testing)

Recon Independent Assessments tests more than windows. The same quality and value that has made our window testing a success is available when your project requires Field Roof Uplift Testing such as the ASTM E 907 or FM 1-52. Our team can easily deploy to your project and perform the required test with ease. Contact Recon Independent Assessments to discuss your needs. Our cost proposal will have you asking; "How quickly can you get here?"

Field Testing / Quality Control your project deserves at a cost your budget will appreciate!

Moisture Intrusion Investigation

Recon Independent Assessments helps put and end to images like these:

Recon Independent Assessments prefers to be on the proactive side of the equation providing validation testing during the construction of a building. Unfortunately, even where testing takes place (not every opening is tested), there may be an occassional water intrusion issue after building turnover.

Recon conducts water intrusion investigations wherever your needs require . Contact us today to discuss how we may be able to assist you.

A Healthy Dose of Subtropical Rain is Falling - Did Your Project Get The ASTM E 1105 Testing It Deserved?

Much like in 2001 with Tropical Storm Allison in Texas, there is a Subtropical System making an pre-season visit; this time in Georgia and Florida.

Recon Independent Assessments knows that planning and execution are the key to providing a watertight building envelope on a new structure. Several projects that we've recently provided Field Quality Control Testing on are getting a real world test as Mother Nature sends the coast of Florida and Georgia an early tropical season low pressure system. There is no doubt that some folks are resting a bit easier knowing that the recently installed fenestration and glazing in their projects has been evaluated for field performance via the ASTM E 1105.

Contact Recon Independent Assessments today to allow us to bring you quality ASTM Field Testing that will benefit your project.

Recon Independent Assessments provides quality and value with field testing services using ASTM E 1105 test proceedures.

A calibrated spray rack is placed on the building exterior to simulate rain.

A vaccum chamber is placed on the interior side of the opening and negative pressure is maintained at a prescribed level to test the opening and installed assembly interface.

The negative pressure is maintained and monitored throughout the test cycle.

Visual inspection of the test subject is maintained to check for evidence of water penetration.

The Average Storm Total Rainfall For A Tropical Cyclone Impacting The Lower 48 From The Atlantic Basin Is About 16 Inches

70-75 percent of the storm total falls within a 24 hour period.

In a little less than a month the Atlantic Hurricane Season begins. Every opening in the building envelope that hasn't had a curtainwall, storefront, door, or window installed properly is at risk of being a primary point of entry for wind driven rain.

The time to ensure that your project is protected and delivers a watertight building envelope to the owner is while construction is underway. Ensure your Division 8 Specifications call for verification testing. The ASTM E 1105 Field Test is your reputation's lifeline.

By including the professionals at Recon Independent Assessments in pre-construction meetings with the entire construction project team, testing early in the project to ensure that the interface between the substrates and the installed products is watertight, and testing as the project nears completion; the overall quality of the project can be better prepared for what Mother Nature might throw your way.
