Project Specifiers Beware: Dont Get Caught Accepting What You Dont Want

Define: Water Leakage

When it comes to Division 8 Specifications the Field Testing Section will likely use one of two sources when it comes to defining "water leakage".

Either AAMA or ASTM.

AAMA: The American Architectural Manufacturers Association is a Trade / Manufacturers Association

ASTM: The American Society for Testing and Materials is a Consensus Association
Each organization defines "water leakage" differently.
  • ASTM E 1105: "...penetration of water beyond a plane parallel to the glazing (verticle plane) intersecting the innermost projection of the test specimen, not including interior trim and hardware..."
  • AAMA : "...uncontrolled water that appears on any normally exposed interior surfaces, that is not contained or drained back to the exterior, or that can damage adjacent materials or finishes...The collection of up to 15ml (1/2 oz.) of water in a five minute test...shall not be considered water leakage."

With the real life potential for a rainstorm that could last an hour or more, you might want to consider how you, The Specifier, will define "Water Leakage". An hour could effectively result in 6 ounces of water on the interior...

Once you've selected your performance criteria, test early and test often.

  • Require testing early in the project
  • Test after several typical units have been installed
  • Test again and again (33% & 66%) Verifying your specified criteria is being met.
